i'd rather stay awake while i'm asleep The mouse didn't have a chance. Each paw step was calculated, his eyes careful to spot any thing that might make noise, should it be stepped on. His tail was still behind him, not betraying him in his meticulous approach. The little brown specimen was scurrying around in the leaves, searching for it's own food. It's ears twitched as it moved, listening to the sounds of the forest, but it's rapid movements revealed it's lax guard.
His powerful muscles clenched, and a second later, he launched forward, still silent even in his killing pounce. His paw slammed down onto the mouse, trapping it against the wet ground. Before the rodent could even squeak, his teeth clenched around it's scruff, effectively ending it's life.
Rootstar sat up, and licked his lips. The mouse was skinny, but that wasn't a surprise. No creature could find enough food in the forest right now, not the mice nor the cats. Scraping dirt over his kill, the leader pushed himself to his paws and gave himself a shake. There was hunting to be done; no time could be spared.
Turning, the tom shuffled off further into the swamp, his ears pricked for the sounds of prey.

&hearts IT’S A WORLD OF OUR PAST - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The tiny brown body raced across the moist earth. It was not the best day to go hunting. As she chased after the skinny mouse, she kicked up dirt. Smallflower felt like a apprentice. The she-cat wouldn't let the prey go though, even if that meant getting dirty. Then she suddenly stopped. A gray, brown figure appeared and she quickly hid behind some swamp plants. The mouse ran towards the tom. The small she-cat's eyes witnessed the death of the mouse.
A weird and short sound emerged from the mouse's body as it bleed out. There was a faint scent that smelled of blood and the familiar scent of Rootstar mixed together. The leader had caught the mouse that she was after. "That was the fifth prey I lost today," she thought as Rootstar buried his kill. Smallflower raced after Rootstar until he slowed down. "Rootstar," She called out to him. She walked out into the open so she could be seen clearly.

i'd rather stay awake while i'm asleep He heard the pawsteps before the voice. Ears twitching, the powerful leader slowed his pace, curious. It had to be one of his cats- any trespasser would know to keep their pawsteps light, especially with the SwampClan's hearing abilities. A voice rang out behind him, and Rootstar turned and recognized Smallflower.
Whiskers twitching cordially, the gray brown tom nodded at the she-cat. "Good morning." He greeted lightly, leaping lightly onto a large root and sitting down. "How's hunting?
" Rootstar hopped she had had more luck then him. All morning, the most he'd found was the mouse, and a small mink. It was nearly sunhigh too; normally, he'd have several pieces of prey buried here and there. Glancing briefly at the tops of the trees, the leader wished StarClan would send a little bit of help. His dreams, recently, had been unusually normal. There hadn't been even a whisker of any sort of prophecy, warning, or helping hint. Not even the Clan's medicine cat had learned anything from sharing tongues at High Den at Half-Moon. &hearts IT’S A WORLD OF OUR PAST - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By the time she had reached him, Rootstar had already stopped. Sunlight shot right into her light green orbs and her eyes screwed up. Smallflower blinked to clear the sting from her eyes. The she-cat's well built paws began to sink into the ground. It felt wet and weird. It began to get annoying. "Good morning." The tom's words fluttered through one gray ear and out the other. He even added a nod. "How formal." Smallflower thought as she slightly jumped on the opposite root from which he sat. The she-cat slipped a little and she tried to cover up by sitting down. It must have been the mud. It probably didn't dry yet. When she gets back at camp, she would have to remind herself to wash it off.
"Sometimes I wish I didn't live in a swamp..." Once she was comfortable she returned his nod. "Good morning to you too Rootstar." The leader spoke again. "How's hunting?" Her gaze moved to the paw prints that she made where she last stood. They were tiny. She sighed. "Awful. I haven't caught a single thing. I've just been really uncoordinated today." She mewed quietly but loud enough to where he could hear her. The frown on Smallflower's face made her look really disappointed. StarClan has not been helping at all. Ever since her brother had been captured by twolegs, she has been beginning to doubt StarClan.

i'd rather stay awake while i'm asleep His ears twitching as the younger warrior nearly slipped, his keen eyes taking in her movements. Smallflower was always an interesting warrior; she wasn't as gracious as some, but at the same time she was a potent she-cat. Tail flicking, the leader listened to Smallflower report about her hunting. No surprise, and not because of her coordination. The forest was yielding barely anything, and he couldn't blame her for being a victim like the rest of his Clan.
"It's not you." He rumbled, as his eyes swept the area around them, golden eyes missing nothing. "The forest barely has enough food to feed a kit, let a lone our entire Clan." Speaking of kits, he needed to check in on the queens later. The way the prey had been running recently, none of the queens had been getting enough food.
Shaking his head, and those thoughts out of his mind, Rootstar's attention refocused on Smallflower. "I myself have only caught a meager amount." Two emaciated pieces of fur. The brown tom thought sourly to himself. "All we can do is hope it doesn't get worse." But again, with temperatures steadily dropping, to hope such was all in vain.

♥ IT’S A WORLD OF OUR PAST. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Smallflower watched all of his alert movements. It was almost as if he knew everything that was happening in the forest. He was such a excellent warrior. She wished she could be as good as him. As the tom spoke she seemed distracted by the brown and green landscape. The swamp wasn't constantly bubbling like the other clan's apprentices thought and it of course didn't have monsters living beneath the green water.
But the smell was a bit bad... "It's not you." A very small pink smile shown upon her white jaws. The rest of his words sounded of negative news. The smile disappeared slowly and she looked at Rootstar. Her pupils were black slits inside of light green irises. As the sun sunk lower and it was dim, her pupils turned into round circles. "What do you think will happen to our clan?" Each word that she mewed was filled with curiosity.

i'd rather stay awake while i'm asleep Her eyes were surprisingly unnerving. Shifting his weight from paw to paw, the Rootstar settled for gazing at where a striking orange butterfly was motionless on a high branch of a cypress tree. A guilt rushed upon him- there was no reason for Smallflower, whom he'd known for the longest time, to unnerve him.
His gaze finally returning to the she-cat, Rootstar compressed a sigh. Perhaps it was because her curious gaze reminded him of the rest of his Clan mates. How the curious, and the worried eyes would managed to find him. All asking questions he could only pretend to know the answer to.
Smallflower asked one of those very questions. I would like to know that too. The brown tom thought uneasily, as he met her bright green gaze. He couldn't say that though. His warriors needed him to be strong, to be sure. "We'll have to get used to be hungry." The leader said slowly, calculating each word. "Until new-leaf." If only new-leaf was closer.

♥ IT’S A WORLD OF OUR PAST. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Smallflower watched Rootstar. He looked very unease. She felt a little bad that she made him have this feeling. His eyes turned to a stunning orange butterfly. As the leader gazed at it for a few seconds more she looked back at him. When he finally answered her question a smirk replaced her frown. "I asked what do you think. I really wasn't expecting a straight answer." The she-cat mewed softly. "But I guess it helps me when others answer my questions positively. And I know if you asked StarClan, you'll just have more questions." Smallflower added, smiling and standing. "So we need to be optimistic and have hope. I'm sure things will get better."
Their conversation was very helpful. In a way, they put StarClan down and yet the she-cat choose to have faith in StarClan. After all, she was raised to believe in the clan that was supposed to live in the stars. Even after she has never had contact with them and they seemed to have abandoned her clan. Smallflower jumped off the root and she landed gracefully on the chilling ground. She padded to Rootstar. "So, let's stop having short conversations while our clan is wasting away. Do you want to go hunting together?" She mewed quietly, smiling at the brown, gray tom.

i'd rather stay awake while i'm asleep Ears twitching, Rootstar once again looked away from the female. Her words were gentle and reassuring, even while the forest around them was harsh. Was she just putting up a front too? Rootstar wished he could have courage in his warrior ancestors, but right now there was just too much left unexplained. "Yea." The leader muttered, distracted by his thoughts, "Things will get better." StarClan would reach them, they had to. Without them, the Clans were no better then a bunch of collar-less kittypets.
Tail flicking curiously, Rootstar watched at the she-cat approached. His warriors were still strong though, no matter what. As she extended the offer, he smiled. Yes, because even if StarClan wouldn't help them, they could help each other. Maybe he was wrong... unlike kittypets, they would always stick together. Whiskers twitching, the tom pushed himself to his paws, "Lead the way." There was a glimmer of hope, but how far could it take them?

The muscles in her hind legs bunched, then propelled her forward, as Icypelt jumped over a stagnant pool of water. She landed neatly on the other side and continued on through the tall reeds and other water plants, brown and dying as leaf-bare approached. Soon, snow would be covering the territory, and the lack of prey would be felt even more powerfully. Still, she thought, It'll be easier for me to hide among the white.
She stopped for a moment, relishing the feeling of the cool mud under her paws. Raising her muzzle, she scented the air, drawing the strong smells of the swamp over her scent glands. She knew that she could never be content living anywhere else, though BirdClan and GrassClan scorned them for living among the swamp. She flicked her tail, pink eyes narrowed. I could never live in such an open place as GrassClan's territory, nor in such a dense forest as BirdClan's territory. I hope StarClan's territory has a swamp.
She frowned at that trail of thought. StarClan. Why were they so silent? She trusted her warrior ancestors, and knew they cared for every cat. Something's wrong. Her claws itched, and she scored them across the wet earth beneath her paws. If only we knew what was happening! She hated this feeling; hated it. She had been helpless when a dog took her mother's life, and she was helpless now. She let out a low growl.
Just ahead, the reeds rustled, and a mouse dashed out of the cover of the plants. She shot forward instantly, her paw flashing out and pinning the mouse into the mud. It let out a muffled squeak before she clawed its throat. Straightening up, she closed her eyes. Thank you, mouse, for giving your life so that SwampClan cats may be fed. Thank you, StarClan, for letting me take this mouse for my Clan.
She picked up the small, warm body and carried it to the base of a mossy rock, where she buried it for later. She noted the spot, then stood up again, pricking her ears. The stream wasn't far from here, and she might find some prey tempted by the fresh water. Crouching, she padded silently through the swamp, her bright eyes missing nothing.
